Sex in Sydney

By Jade Rowlington

A recent survey on Sydney sex trends revealed some stunning realities about the sex life of the horny inhabitants of Australia's most fertile city.

Ever wondered just how many people are having sex in Sydney at any given moment? The research company, Wallace, Rainings and Connors, claim that at any moment, there are 25,348 people having sex in Sydney.

Of course, these chronological patterns have their crescendos. The peak time is from 10.30pm to 1.30am, when the statistics convey that around 217,298 people are "doing it".

In a population of over four million, the most popular myth is that at least one person in twenty is "getting it daily". This would be a mis-interpretation of the facts, however. For one person to get it daily, they would need to be having sex with another person, which doubles the amount of people who are likely to be having sex "outside the search results", as Wallace, Rainings and Connors spokeperson Aleasha Frontier admits.

According to Frontier, this means that at peak times, which are Tuesday and Wednesday nights "when regular couples admit to having sex most regularly", there may be as many as 400,000 people actually having sex.

Does sex with yourself count? I asked Frontier whether masturbation can still be counted towards the survey.

"Certainly, with a large part of the Sydney population being single, we did include masturbation as an act of sex," she reports.

The question begs, therefore, as to just what type of sex is the most popular in Sydney? The results, taken from a survey of over 4000 people, support many of our preconceptions relating to population, geography, and overall horniness. Here are some of the most compelling pieces of data:

General Tastes in Sex

Oral Sex: 69% approval
Doggy Style: 68% approval
Missionary Position: 45% approval
Girl on Top: 36% approval
Masturbation: 26% approval
Celibacy: 8% approval
Anal Sex: 14% approval
Protected Sex: 22% approval
Unprotected Sex: 93% approval

Locations

Bedroom: 89% approval
Bathroom: 45% approval
Car: 41% approval
Car while Driving: 6% approval
Kitchen: 15% approval
Parent's bedroom: 9% approval
Lounge: 38% approval
Outdoors: 17% approval

Geography

Missionary Position: most popular in St Ives, Vaucluse and Pymble

Oral Sex on Women: most popular in Newtown, Glebe and Balmain

Oral Sex on Men: most popular in Parramatta, North Ryde and Penrith

Anal Sex: most popular in Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, and Surry Hills again

Masturbation: most popular in teenage mortgage-belt suburbs such as La Perouse, Artarmon and Granville

Multiple Orgasm: most frequent in Bondi, Paddington and Rose Bay

Celibacy: frequent in Catholic areas such as Woollahra and Muslim areas such as Liverpool

Swinging: the Blue Mountains and Central Coast

Purchased Sex: Kings Cross, Cabramatta and Sydney CBD

Future Sex?

In one of the most controversial results of the survey, the 18 - 25 year old demographic, who formerly led the way in approval of all categories of sex, seem to be finding other things to do with their leisure time. The average young Sydneysider now rates lifestyle priorities thus:

1. Saving for first mortgage: 57%

2. Taking ecstacy and talking about crucial dance music trends: 45%

3. Washing the Golf or Peugeot: 42%

4. Hanging out at the newest Bar: 38%

5. Having or Thinking about Sex: 14%
